David Warner leads Delhi Capitals into IPL 2023
Australian offensive player David Warner will lead the Delhi Capitals in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the absence of the injured Rishabh Pant, ESPN Cricket info reported on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Head coach Ricky Pointing and team management have agreed that the Australian star is the best man to lead the team on a transitional basis while Pant gradually recovers after surviving a horrific car accident in December. With Pant out for all of 2023, the Capitals had to look for an interim captain, and Warner was a good choice alongside Axar Patel, who was vice-captain in 2022.
This is the second time Warner has led the Capitals. In his previous time with the franchise from 2009 and 2013, he led the team in a pair of games.
The offensive player was bought by Sun risers Hyderabad in 2014 and led the team to its first title in 2016. He won 35 of 69 matches as captain, lost 32 and drew two. The burden of captaincy has not affected Warner either. He has 2,840 runs at an average of 47.33 and a strike rate of 142.28, a century and 26 fifties as captain. But a dip in form in the first half of the 2021 IPL season forced SRH to bench Warner and replace him with Kane Williamson as captain.
